Writing Workshop with Mylène Dressler

On Saturday, May 21st, 2011, published novelist Dr Mylène Dressler led a writing workshop for Moab Poets & Writers members and guests. The workshop was held at the MARC. As this is the last writing workshop she will be able to lead in some time, Mylène generously donated the proceeds to MP&W and The Desert Voice. Mylène is moving to North Carolina for several years to take a position at Guilford College.

The four-hour workshop, titled "Writing And Publishing The Personal Essay," was held at the MARC. Mylène explained that she has recently been exploring the genre of creative non-fiction in the form of personal essays.

The personal essay is a writer’s self-expression that is based on a personal experience, and this workshop involved a lot of discussion on how to write your own personal essay. Through a series of writing exercises, Mylène challenged the group members to discover the craft of non-fiction writing through the medium of a personal essay.

Most of the essays written by participants were shared with particpants and analyzed by the group.

Toward the end of the workshop, Mylène explained how participants could submit their personal essays for publication along with suggestions on where they could submit their writing.
