Writing Workshop with Mylène Dressler
On Saturday, September 12th, 2009, Mylène Dressler led another writing writing workshop for Moab Poets & Writers. The workshop, held at the MARC, was well attended.
Mylène pointed out that short short story writing is sometimes called "Flash Fiction" or "Sudden Fiction." Whatever you call it, the short short story strives to tell a tale in very few words. Therefore, the writing needs to set the scene quickly and to be conservative with descriptions.
Mylène handed out several award-winning short short stories for participants to read. She then asked the attendees to emulate the first sentence of the example and use it as a springboard for writing a similar story of their own.
During the workshop, some attendees read what they wrote in an exercise.
Mylene led the group in some hand and arm exercises, designed to get the creative juices flowing.
